Women’s Initiatives, founded by Prof. G. S. Jayasree, is a not-for-profit organisation of academics and professionals which was formed in the year 2000. A collective of seven Women’s Studies scholars, it is committed to instilling the spirit of self-awareness in women by focussing on studies and research issues pertaining to women, with reference to India in the context of globalisation. The broad objective is to highlight the relevance of knowledge in any endeavour for freedom. The members are committed to exploring culture-specific responses to women’s problems and are receptive to positive ideas, opinions, suggestions and constructive criticism from all quarters. The collective brought forth a journal, Samyukta- A Journal for Women’s Studies, which was later rechristened Samyukta: A Journal of Gender and Culture
